Her debut single “Bashtalaak” is a product of her lifelong training in voice and exploration through multiple genres which led her to co-create with composer-songwriter Georges El-Basha the style they describe as "Jarabic", a perfect blend of eastern and western music.
Following the release, her music created a buzz in the World Music scene. Major curiosity was ignited about the young independent singer-songwriter which followed by media attention with appearances on national television & radio interviews across Canada & Egypt.
Inspired by stories that touch close to home, Tonya co-wrote with Georges El-Basha the song "Bashtaalak" which means "I miss you" to honor the many lives affected by today's war-torn world. The video clip was directed by filmmaker Juan Carlos Huerta, who also worked on the visual effects team of the latest “Men in Black: International” , "Blade Runner 2049" and "American Gods" brought the song to life through his lens. He transports you into the story with nature's four elements; earth, wind, water & fire to tell the story of a love blooming in the midst of chaos and life's unexpected turn of events.
Tonya is influenced by all facets of storytelling from music to poetry to visual arts. Her earthy and cinematic composition is influenced by the likes of Soad Massi, Fayrouz & Adele bringing a perfect fusion of the Egyptian dialect with soulful melodies and contemporary Arabic sounds that can be heard on her upcoming EP due to be released Fall 2019.
